Employee Name: Sheri Troyer
Location: Ohio, United States
Job Title: Client Support & Solutions Manager
Length of time at GTreasury: 16 years in Coprocess

Q. What do you believe are your key strengths?

A. I have a desire to always find the answer and solve the puzzle, hence my residence here in a solutions-oriented area. Whether it be a client question about why a certain number on a report out of the system is what it is – or a broader question related to the application of accounting guidance and how we are going to implement a client from point A to point B. I take it seriously that every task and action I do throughout the day should be value-added and helping/contributing to a greater goal.

Q. How do you keep track of the things you need to do?

A. I use OneNote to organize my longer-term goals and projects but to be honest, on a daily basis, you’ll find me surrounded by little note pads where I track all the things that have to be done in the next few minutes, next hour, next day. As for life in general, I couldn’t live without my Outlook calendar – my entire family’s life is on there and I would be lost without it. I live for the “no scroll” in my inbox so that I only have items that are still outstanding and needing action sitting there – the rest are filed into organized folders.

Q. What makes you happy in a job?

A. No matter where I’ve worked – it has always been the people that make your job worth it. Yes, it is great to have responsibilities and subject matter in your role that you personally align with and enjoy doing – however, it is the friendships and bonds you form with others that make you excited to show up for work each day. Knowing that my work or advice has helped another colleague or one of our clients is also a great feeling.

Q. Why do you feel you have work/life balance? Do you have any tips/tricks for others to improve their work/life balance?

A. In my former workplace and since coming here to GTreasury, I have been blessed to be able to work as a part-time professional since I had my first son back in 2011. I am a strong advocate for diversity in when and how a job gets done, outside of the traditional 40-hour work week model that was set up over a century ago. If you do it right – no one will even know you are not full-time. We have tools and technology today that allow us to work from home and on-the-go which allows for greater work/life balance as long as one remembers to disconnect. I can say I personally struggle with this at times – as I’m sure a lot of the workforce does – so setting boundaries for yourself and not checking up on emails or Teams constantly is a must. Your moral conscience says I need to respond and help this client or colleague right now, but you have to allow yourself to have “working hours” and stick to those.

Q. Think about a good manager you’ve had. What did they do that made them a good manager?

A. The best managers have always been those that are great listeners. Listening to you fill them in on an important issue/decision that has to be made for the business or just listening to you vent about how you didn’t sleep well because of the howling winds, the power going out, and how your kids keep missing homework assignments. They are there for you professionally and personally. They never micro-manage and they trust me to do my job to the best of my ability, but should I find myself stuck and needing assistance – they are always there to make time to support and guide me through it.

Q. What do you like about the work environment or culture here?

A. As mentioned previously, I am so grateful to work for a company that supports my desire to have a challenging and professional role but still honor flexibility around my family’s schedule and personal needs. The projects here are always challenging at first but that much more rewarding in the end once you get it all figured out. From my seat, everyone here treats each other as equals regardless of title. We are all working towards the same goals and one person’s opinion isn’t better than another’s due to their title – and I think that is a very important attribute to have in workplace culture.

Working for a small company means you are mindful of all aspects of the business and thus you work even harder, in my opinion, since every move you make contributes to the bottom line and you want nothing more than for the company to succeed. It is harder to “feel your impact” like that in a large corporation.

Q. Who are some of your biggest inspirations at GTreasury?

A. Annette Engel has inspired me since my first day here. Not only is she super knowledgeable in the hedging space – I still learn something new from her every day, I swear – but she has this unbelievable can-do attitude at all times. No task is too big or too small for her. Also, Helen Kane, who founded Hedge Trackers, was always an inspiration to me as well. I am so thankful that 20+ years ago she took a risk diving into a very technical, unique space – all the while supporting remote, flexible professionals long before Covid forced the world into that type of environment.

Q. How have you grown professionally at GTreasury?

A. I graduated from college with an accounting degree and worked in corporate accounting and finance for the first 15 years of my career. The types of things I get to do working here cross over all aspects of the business – working on product specs and design, software and QA testing, customer service, external communications – so much more than just the practice of accounting. My skill set has grown tremendously since I’ve joined GTreasury.

Q. What’s the best advice you can give to someone who just started their career?

A. Never be afraid to ask questions or challenge why a process is the way it is. Sometimes it takes an idea from a different perspective to move things along or solution a complex issue – and that idea could be yours. Don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone for a project or role. If something does not feel easy and secure for you – it means it is a learning and growth opportunity for you. You’ll come out on the other side thankful for all your new skills and experiences.

Q. What’s something you are passionate about outside of the workplace?

A. My husband and I are raising three boys together – ages 7, 10, and 13 at the moment, and life outside of work really revolves around them. Not that you can say I am passionate about being surrounded by loud noises and chaos – I am embracing it and living for it each day. I have always been a lover of music – I am still listening to my favorites from the early 2000s, and I love attending concerts. Despite working for the “risk” component of the business, opposites attract – and I cannot seem to pass up a slot machine or a bonus bet on FanDuel.
